Tech Institute MIT Create AlterEgo Device That Listens To Voice In Your Head (Photos)

A top tech company MIT have created a device that listens to the voice in your head, Techmachos Reports.

Researchers at MIT have developed a wearable device that can read people’s minds when they use an internal voice, allowing them to control devices and ask queries without speaking.

The device, called AlterEgo, can transcribe words that wearers verbalise internally but do not say out loud, using electrodes attached to the skin.

AlterEgo was presented at the Association for Computing Machinery’s Intelligent User Interface conference in Tokyo.

The AlterEgo device managed an average of 92% transcription accuracy in a 10-person trial with about 15 minutes of customising to each person.

When someone says words inside their head, artificial intelligence within the device can match particular signals to particular words, feeding them into a computer.

The computer can then respond through the device using a bone conduction speaker that plays sound into the ear without the need for an earphone to be inserted, leaving the wearer free to hear the rest of the world at the same time.

The idea is to create a outwardly silent computer interface that only the wearer of the AlterEgo device can speak to and hear.

“We basically can’t live without our cellphones, our digital devices. But at the moment, the use of those devices is very disruptive,” said Pattie Maes, a professor of media arts and sciences at MIT.

“If I want to look something up that’s relevant to a conversation I’m having, I have to find my phone and type in the passcode and open an app and type in some search keyword, and the whole thing requires that I completely shift attention from my environment and the people that I'm with to the phone itself.”

“Our idea was: could we have a computing platform that’s more internal, that melds human and machine in some ways and that feels like an internal extension ofour own cognition? ” said Arnav Kapur, who led the development of the system at MIT’s Media Lab.

The only downside is that users will have to wear a device strapped to their face, a barrier smart glasses such as Google Glass failed to overcome.

But experts belive this tech has much potential, not only in the consumer space for activities such as dictation but also in industry.

WhatsApp Confirm Status Ads Launch For 2020 (Photos, Video)

WhatsApp have confirmed that status updates will begin showing ads in year 2020, Techmachos Reports.

At an annual Facebook Marketing Summit in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Facebook offered a first look at how its ads would look once implemented.

This revelation was confirmed on Twitter by Olivier Ponteville, the media head at a digital marketing agency based out of Brussels.

According to Ponteville, the advertisements will be shown betweenWhatsApp stories, just like Instagram stories.

In a video ads preview, Olivier explained that stories would be displayed entirely on the screen and a link will redirect users to the website.

From what we know so far, the advertisements will be powered by Facebook's native advertising system and would be aimed at helping users understand and participate in businesses using the messaging app.

Facebook's intentions to monetise WhatsApp had earlier forced the hugely popular messaging service's co-founders to leave the company.

For those who're aware, WhatsApp's "Status" feature allows users to share text, photos, videos, and animated GIFs that disappear after 24 hours — identical to how Instagram stories work.

Status ads are also likely to provoke a smaller outcry than paying a small fee for messages.

Amazon Offers $25 Gift Cards For 3D Entire Body Scan (Photo)

Amazon is offering users $25 gift cards in exchange for its 3D Scanner to scan your entire body, Techmachos Reports.

The Ecommerce giant is conducting a study at its office as part of a test that seeks to 'learn about diversity among body shapes,' according to a listing, which was first spotted by Mashable.

Participants who set up a 30-minute appointment will be asked to take a survey and agree to have 3D scans, photos and videos taken of them.

The move comes as Amazon has faced privacy concerns around its collection of data from Echo devices, as well as the deployment of its controversial facial recognition software.

Scans will be taken in both their 'everyday clothing,' as well as 'form-fitting' garments, which for women might include a bikini or form-fitting shorts and a sports bra, the listing states.

Participants' height and weight measurements will also be taken during each session.

Amazon said any data collected from participants will 'be used exclusively for internal product research.'

How To Sign-Up?

The signup page here for the study claims that Amazon takes 3D scans, photos, and videos of study participants, both fully clothed and in “form-fitting” swimwear.

On the website, Amazon states that the data collected during the study is “exclusively for internal product research” and will not be used in a marketing capacity.

The firm added that it won't use the data for marketing purposes, however, it noted that any responses are subject to Amazon's Privacy Notice, which details what kinds of data it collects and how it is managed.

Moment Robot Dog Pulls A 3-ton Aeroplane Across More Than 30 Feet (Photos)

A robot dog has shocked everyone in the tech industry as a video shows just how advanced it has become.

A 'HyQReal' robo-dog can be seen dragging an airplane that weighs a whopping 3 tons across the Geneva Airport in Italy.

HyQReal was created by researchers at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) as a device designed to support humans in emergency situations.

Luckily, as the video shows, the robot dog would almost certainly be capable of lifting a heavy human.

The robot dog drags the heavy airplane with apparent ease across approximately 33 feet before a researcher with a game controller makes it stop.

It's an amazing feat, considering the HyQReal weighs just over 280lbs and is roughly 4ft long.

IIT revealed that the robot has 'custom-made' feet with special rubber grips attached so that it has strong traction on the ground.
